73rd International Instructor Course - Livingston, Scotland
Mr. Pete Dodd IV Dan recently attended the 73rd International Instructors Course held in Livingston, Scotland between 11th - 13th May 2012 hosted by Master Sutherland and Taekwon-Do Scotland.

For the benefit of those who could not attend, Mr. Dodd has made his notes from the course available below:

Grandmaster Lan

When fighting in real life, best to use open hand techniques so not to break hands
Self Defence
  • dobok grabs - slip to closed side - or dip under to release
  • don`t always need to release the hand, as it is the free hand that can punch you
  • neck grab from the side - grab hand and strike simultaneously to groin
  • neck grab from the front - shrug shoulders up to protect arteries, then strike to eyes or groin.

How to get courage when you face a world champion

  • imagine that person is threatening your family or country - you fight for your life or someone elses, but at the end we are all friends
Step Sparring
  • GM Bos prefers there to be set movements for the different step sparrings - this helps students not to freeze up when trying to think of an attack or a defence
  • attacker shows technique, then defender shows block/evade
  • not all students are able to explain the purpose of step sparring, or how to explain the differences between them

  • General points for patterns Grandmaster Bos/ Grandmaster Marano

    • A student (and instructor) should practise ALL pattern movements with a partner to understand application before learning the pattern
    • Reemphasise heights of techniques - middle blocks line up with shoulder, high are at eye level. Middle kicks are shoulder and high ones are eye level
    • in between movements, if it not specified then hands should always come to natural position
    • centre line turn frequently performed wrong. move front foot inwards on diagonal about 6 inches, then pivot on that foot and turn in opposite direction to perform next technique
    • Hanulson is performed with the thumbs at philtrum level
    • Twin arc hand block - ALWAYS look towards hands. elbow should be below hand. purpose is to block a thrown object, not two flying attackers as in the encyclopaedia
    • Whenever there is a shifting movement it must be performed immediately
    • Downward blocks or punches. GM Bos recommends a quick look in that direction, as in the application of the technique, whilst remembering that you should end up looking forward - Juche contains the only downward looking technique

    Chon Ji

    • when moving punching hand forward when relaxing, it is important not to overemphasise the forward motion

    Dan Gun

    • continuous low block/rising block - low block is side facing, then switch to front facing as you dip then perform rising block in full facing
    • all other examples of this are the same ie Do San side front block into front punch
    • chookyo makgi with forearm not side fist. Also forearm must be angled and not too close to the forehead as the striking tool can still hit the head

    Do San

    • Sun Sonkut Tulgi, non striking hand is performing a block, and protecting the elbow - re-emphasis

    Won Hyo

    • last two moves - guarding block to one side, then hands come to middle, then back before final guarding block
    • Dollimyo Makgi, blocking hand should not be too far out, outer forearm lines up with outer shoulder and rear foot. Front shoulder is slightly down but not overly so.
    • after front kicks, do not fall into the next technique, maintain balance, and use sinewave when performing the punch

    Yul Gok

    • Golchya Makgi followed by Golchya Makgi. First golchya is half facing, second is half facing in the opposite direction, and final punch is full facing. This is a common mistake
    • Ap Palkup is performed slightly lower than the shoulder
    • Back fist is performed in line with the front foot in kyocha so - this is a general rule - i.e. downward punch in Moon Moo

    Joon Gun

    • Sonbadak ollyo should be circular, not performed from hip
    • After guarding block change to front facing before elbow. Also do not twist the body, stay in full facing for elbow. This is the same for the pressing block later

    Toi gye

    • Grab before knee is to the shoulders not the head.

    Choong Moo

    • spinning knife hand guarding block - hands must come from behind. Difficult to perform, but not impossible

    Kwang Gae

    • Hanulson - thumbs at philtrum height
    • Stay in full facing for upset punches
    • After high knife hand blocks, turn to be full facing before performing sonbadak ollyo makgi
    • After sang dwijibun jirugi, and then the front kick the kicking foot must be placed next to the non kicking foot before turning. This allows more power in the block from the spin

    Po Eun

    • First technique is not an upward punch, just place hands there
    • Forefist block - blocking hand does not need to be raised up so much. simply start the technique from a natural position, same for twin side punch
    • Digutja Gapji - palm doesn`t need to face completely upwards as this is an unnatural position. Simply place the hand so it is ready to perfom the grab, as in the application
    • Twin elbow strike - elbows should be pushed out so they are in line with the back

    Gae Bek

    • continuous knife hand guarding blocks - keep moving, bring hands to natural position in between both blocks. hard to describe in words
    • knife hand checking block is to the front, and quite high, the forearms are not perpendicular (90/90) but form a (appoximately) 30/150 degree angle
    • front back fist is almost vertical and not too far forward, after scooping block and punch
    • after second opun sonkut, just bring hands back, no need to grab front hand. This is only in Choong Jang
    • understanding of 9 shape block criticised by GM Bos. Downward hand is on the inside
    • Dool Palmok Yop Makgi - blocking tool in line with front foot

    Choong Jang

    • first block - forearm is almost vertical, knuckles should be eye level
    • backfist is almost vertical, not sticking too far away from the body
    • fingertip thrust is in low stance, to prepare to drop down to the floor
    • Sonbadak Ollyo Makgi is not in slow motion
    • After the twin palm pressing block, remember to pull the hands back to the opposite hip when performing the knee front kick
    • back palm strike to the clavicle - easier to understand than to the head of a seated opponent (from the encyclopaedia)
    • elbow strike - forearm is vertical
    • inji joomuk must be held in place with the thumb as in the picture - they way to check your is right is to move to push up position with Inji joomuk. The wrong way has no rigidity or strength
    • Pyon joomuk is performed with an almost straight wrist, not verly bent, and certainly not at 90 degrees

    Eui Am

    • cross hands in front of body when forming Moa Junbi Sogi D, at the beginning an dend of the pattern
    • reverse turning kick to 45 degrees - with sine wave afterwards
    • high crescent punch is to chest line - target is the line of the jaw
    • turning punch is middle at solar plexus position
    • middle wedging block - fingertips of hands must be at shoulder level - this is a common mistake
    • shifting movement (reverse knifehand block) must be performed directly after the preceeding punch

    Juche

    • twin forearm block, forearms are almost vertical, at shoulder line. Blocking tools are at eye level not knuckles
    • Parallel block with outer forearm is performed slightly inside the shoulder line. Blocking tool at eye level to defend against a single attack (bandae Dollyo chagi)
    • Mid air strike with knife hand - you must move forward as you strike
    • After cross cut at eye level, elbow strike is performed in a walking stance diagonally after you shift from sitting stance
    • downward elbow strike - elbow is at solar plexus height
    • After Sang bang chagi, land with both feet at the same time
    • When in Goburyo Junbi, lean slightly forward for balance and to help the back kick (same for moon Moo)
    • Back fist strike is performed with a straight arm - this is another common mistake
